If North India becomes Hindia, and South Splits, it won't be South India, Nor Dravidia, it will just be set of individual countries for each current State, like Tamil Nadu (where Nadu literally means Country). This is a lobsided problem. Hindia would have more states under  its control and would technically be more dominant I suppose. Just a thought experiment. The only solution is to have equal number of seats from each state. 
Currently cow belt states have more dominance as their numbers are high so they make and break the total dominance of India politics. 

Any party who needs to win the election needs to appease the ministers of cow belt states. Plus they also need to entertain them and overlook all of their corruption acts. 

When the number of seats become equal from each state each state will have equal rights and it will remove the current dominance of ministers from cow belt states in the parliament. Thereby having a better inclusive decisions in parliament and also this might also result in correct distribution of GST amount.

This will also ensure that ministers from cow belt will no more enjoy the immunity they currently enjoy and will force them to concentrate on atleast little bit of progress in their state there by bringing in development in the cow belt thereby reducing the migration of cow belt residents to other states and thus preserving the culture in other states and also preserving the diversity of India.

One most important thing is that Marathis should use marathi language more often. Whenever someone speaks to a marathi in Hindi, Marathis generally reply back in Hindi, even if broken. How will a hindi person feel a need to learn marathi if Marathis are bending over backwards to learn Hindi and make outsiders accomodative. You should use marathi as much as you can, and use hindi only as a last option, not the other way around. You should expose the sound of marathi to outsiders more often.

See, people don't learn a new language unless they feel the need to. So if Marathis restrict the use of marathi to their homes or only among themselves, outsiders will never feel the need to learn.

Chennai gives a very important lesson here. Till date I never read a news where a person was harassed for not speaking tamil in Chennai, they organize protests against the central government very often but they never harass or attack general public, because they don't have to. They will speak only in tamil or some times in English to an outsider. Tamils don't learn Hindi, because it's of no use for them. So outsiders eventually have to pick up some tamil in order to get things done. Outsiders will feel lost/isolated if they don't learn tamil in tamil nadu, so they pick up the language. 

You can never find a single outsider who lived in tamil nadu and went to school in tamil nadu but doesn't know tamil. But you will find plenty of 2nd/3rd generation settlers in maharashtra who are not capable of forming even a single marathi sentence, all because of the reason I mentioned above.

I realized that it will only be possible if Maharashtra or in fact any state's language becomes a global leader in innovation or progressive thinking. The reason people learn German isn't because Germans force them, it's because they are the best at global innovation, same goes for Japanese.

Marathis should create environment such that outsiders have to learn Marathi even if they don’t want I.e. outsiders should have no choice but to learn Marathi . My solution is to create a Common Indian Language Framework. Just like Europe, introduce language proficiency levels A1 to C2. Make them mandatory for jobs and immigration.

I have a solution for this and not just Marathi but all states that have a regional education mediums. There can be language learning portals where one has to pass exams(vocal exams) and passing these exams must be mandatory to have any private/public jobs in the state. The first exam must be cleared within four years post which a person cannot continue their job if they don’t pass. Second level proficiency after 6 years and so on.

This would solve two issues: 
1. Person who plans to stay long term must assimilate.
2. People who get transferred frequently won’t be bothered.

Mumbai is the financial capital of India ..and it didn’t become that way just because of Marathas or Mumbaikars alone. People from all over the country have come here to work, build, and contribute ..directly or indirectly …to Mumbai’s growth and to India’s too. So it makes sense for Maharashtra to embrace that diversity, including when it comes to language.

Yes, of course, learning the local language is important if you’re living somewhere long-term. But forcing it on people? That’s not the way. Language should be picked up out of love, need, and connection ..not fear or pressure.

Instead of intimidation, the government could offer evening classes for workers, create online courses, give language certifications that help people get more points in jobs, licences, or business permits. Reward those who learn Marathi, and over time, things will shift naturally.

Violence only pushes people away ..it breeds resentment toward the language and the place. That’s not good for anyone. Beating up someone who’s working 18 hours a day just to make ends meet ..who maybe only studied till 10th grade ..just because they haven’t learned Marathi yet? That’s heartbreaking. We need more empathy, not hostility.

No language can be made mandatory in India except English. We got the IT revolution because of English I dont see any problem why we need to make another language mandatory. 

The ground reality in most work place is that people communicate in English, some people try to learn local language and some people prefer not to. Maybe they don't want to settle down there so why should they learn the local language for 1-2 years. This issue of language is seen with lower middle class society like bus drivers, autowalas, small shopkeepers and political goons. These jobs are highly union controlled which have heavy political influence. That's the grass root cause of this language issue which we are seeing.

It's not really about the language. It's about what it implies. People strongly identify with their native language. When some language comes and invades their homes it feels like their identity is under attack. It makes them feel like there's a hierarchy of importance and power given to languages and by extension their identity. Hindi is at the top and every other language is down below. Therefore non Hindi people are less important or worth less than Hindi speaker, is what's translated in their minds. 

The rhetoric of Hindi being the true and most authentic representation of Indian and Hindu culture doesn't help either.

Also politicians use this to their advantage and stoke the fires.

It's all about identity and making people feel important or inclusive.
This language war needed a soft and delicate touch, and it having come a bit too heavy handed just makes people resist more.

The Hindi-speaking bloc’s GDP is already ~$1.3T, larger than Brazil, and could exceed $3.3T by 2035, rivaling Germany today. Being fluent in Hindi may soon be as valuable for jobs and business as English has been for global mobility.

Let the language warriors think that Hindi is evil and they should not learn it. In 5-10 years, they will be limiting their own labor mobility. Already cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai are full of migrants from the north and they will only increase as the fertility rate of those regions fall. Right now these cities think they can continue with their west and IT dreams - that too will come crashing down soon.

I wont indulge in this debate because I KNOW that economics will teach them a lesson very soon.

I have nothing against native languages but please believe in the 3 language formula.

I agree with your points broadly. No doubt, one should learn Marathi in Maharashtra, but the State should have a policy on this. One can't just go about expecting that migrants would, state force is necessary. It's as necessary as it was to lower fertility rates. I know it might cost taxes, but if people are living for 15-20 years in Maharashtra, they are bound to live another 15-20 years more. Why not invest in spoken Marathi classes?

However, I have watched this instagrammer. It's almost verbal diarrhea. Hating on Punjabis migrating to Delhi, calling Duppatta a stolen and appropriated product of South India by North Indians and what not.

Bihari here, been living in pune for 20+ years. I can confirm from my experience, if you're respectful towards another person's culture, there will be no issues at all. My best friends are marathi, they never force me to speak in marathi, instead they speak in hindi with me, but since I can speak in marathi, it makes them happy. They speak in hindi for my happiness, i speak in marathi for their happiness. They help me in time of need, i help them in time of need. I celebrate ganesh chaturthi with them and they celebrate chath puja with me. I have friends from almost all the states, rajashthan, gujarat, punjab, bengal, we all speak in hindi for mutual understanding. no one fights with each on basis of languages because we respect each other's co existence. marathis are not wrong for them asking you to respect their language. and honestly, if you cant respect someone's culture and language, you shouldn't step out of your house because if you're arrogant to people of your own village, even they won't help you. Is mutual respect for each other's culture too much to ask for communal harmony? If you can't respect marathi in Maharashtra you shouldn't be even allowed to go back to your village, because if you cant respect the language that feeds you, you cant respect your mother tongue as well.

I am all for preserving cultures and languages, but to say that someone not knowing local language is disrespectful is wrong. Further, beating or hurting people for not speaking language is also wrong.

Take action against discriminatory practice is all I have to say, I know the situation is complex and requires a large scale discussion which won't be provided by this comment, or maybe even this thread, due to its inability. But we have to be kinder. All of us, not just maharashtrians.

It’s honestly quite ironic. The same people today who loudly claim to “protect” and “preserve” their culture are behaving exactly like the invaders they condemn.

Take Sambhaji Maharaj, for example—son of the great Shivaji Maharaj. He was captured, brutally tortured, and executed by the Mughals because he refused to abandon his faith and convert. And yet, neither Shivaji nor Sambhaji ever enforced their religion or culture on others. In fact, they were known for their tolerance, diplomacy, and fairness towards people of all backgrounds—including those who were their political rivals.

And now, centuries later, some of their so-called “followers” are doing the very thing the Mughals were infamous for—forcing their beliefs onto others, rejecting anyone who doesn’t comply, and in some cases even resorting to violence. It’s as if they’ve forgotten everything those leaders actually stood for.

Here’s my honest question to all the proud descendants of the great Maratha rulers—the brave lion-hearts of this land: Many people have come to this great land of Maharashtra simply to earn a living, to work hard and survive.

Can we not just co-exist peacefully, as Shivaji and Sambhaji themselves once allowed people of all backgrounds to do? Is it really mandatory to impose a language test for belonging?

And if it truly is, then shouldn’t the government just seal the borders and allow entry only to those who already speak the language? Where exactly do we draw the line?

You force others to speak marathi, not the other way round. 
No one’s forcing you to speak Hindi. Don’t go to the shops who don’t speak marathi, live and let live. No one is asking you to take the auto if the driver speaks Hindi. YOU are the one going to shops and forcing Marathi.
That is NOT co-existence, that is forcing your views on others. So stop pretending.

A lot of people here in US speak Spanish, instead of English. I don’t force them, I just go to the shops which understand English. I don’t force English, Hindi or anything on anyone. THAT is co-existence.

and we’ve seen how y’all behave in Muslim majority areas. All your pride goes out of the window there. Why don’t you all go and force them to speak Marathi, and remove the Urdu sign boards? Why don’t you force thakrey family to send your kids to Marathi school? You guys can only torture poor helpless people. A bunch of bullies is all you guys are.

I think keeping ones own language alive should be their own responsibility, the onus does not lie with others who speak a different language.

I understand the argument. But, aren't Marathis themselves to be blamed for this decline of Marathi language usage? 

Shouldn't you have gone for the Karnataka &amp; Andhra model? Or maybe one step further like TN?

You basically created an environment where Hindi was seen as the Primary mode of communication in your Metros. How is it the immigrants fault if he was NEVER needed to learn Marathi?

And now you're crying foul that Marathi is no longer even the secondary mode of communication in Mumbai?

Dude your logic is completely flawed. With that logic we should start issuing visas to travel between states and setup requirements to know certain languages in order to get visas accepted.

The thing is native mumbaikars themselves dont communicate in marathi except when they are in their peer groups (if all are marathis). I lived in mumbai for 3 years and never did i see marathi being spoken in any public space be it college, autowalas, shopkeepers, stations or anywhere else. In such an environment where only hindi and English is primarily used how is it natural and even necessary to put an effort to learn marathi?

One of the taxi drivers from UP working in Mumbai knew Marathi. Yet, he was thrashed by MNS goons solely because he was from UP. This isn't just about language, it is more about region.
